The only way of catching a train I have ever discovered is to miss the train before.

Yesterday a majority of the day was spent on the train to San Diego to and fro. I was on the Amtrak and what a treat. The seats were comfortable, there was a plug to keep the computer charged, and stereotypical California scenery aplenty.
Because of this trip and pleasant experience, I plan to take a nice day or weekend trip to San Diego via the train in the near future. A round-trip ticket was approximately $50 from Union Station.
These photos were taken from inside the train through a rain-spotted window:
If you look carefully you can see the reflection of the camera.

That sounds very pleasant. I'll have to try it.
I'm a big train fan, too. We used it to go to the Avocado festival in Carpinteria in 06. It picked us up a mile or so from our house. That said, it was standing room only and we had to pay for an upgrade. It ended up costing almost $100, which seemed pricey. A lovely trip, though, despite the cost.
I really want to take to Coast Starliner to Seattle some day. I did have a couple of chances when I was young to ride the last non-Amtrak passenger route--the Southern Crescent from New Orleans to Washington. :)
Thanks for the memory trip, TM.
What she said, except that when we paid for the business-class upgrade so that we could sit down—which I realize was the point, after all—I thought the upgrade amenities of a copy of USA Today, packaged mini muffins, and canned juice was a might lame.
