I think this is a rather thoughtful act to not burden one child with the "middle-child syndrome;" this way they can all grow up ignored,forgotten, and forever kept in hand-me downs.
Anybody called 'Jim Bob' should think carefully before having 17 children. He certainly should never let any of them marry each other.
